Understanding Emotional Suppression & Its Impact

So often we are told to ‘get a grip’, or ‘get control’ over our emotions. However, suppressing our emotional experiences, however painful they may be, can often lead to much more difficult suffering down the road.

Expressing our emotions allows us to communicate and connect with others, as well as learning about ourselves. Furthermore, discussing the effects of emotional suppression is crucial, as it can have significant consequences on both mental and physical health.

Understanding Emotional Suppression

Emotional suppression is a psychological phenomenon where individuals consciously inhibit their emotional expressions, opting to hide or control their feelings rather than expressing them openly. It involves the deliberate effort to inhibit the outward signs of inner emotions.

Emotional suppression differs from other emotional regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, which involves changing one’s interpretation of a situation to alter its emotional impact. This distinction is important because suppression does not address the underlying emotional experience but merely conceals it.

People may choose to suppress their emotions for various reasons, including societal expectations, personal beliefs, or a desire to avoid conflict and discomfort. Some cultures encourage the expression of emotions, while others view emotional restraint as a virtue.

Family dynamics and parental attitudes toward emotions can also influence whether individuals feel comfortable expressing their feelings. Societal expectations, such as the stereotype that men must be stoic for example, can pressure individuals into suppressing their emotions.

Sigmund Freud suggested that repressed emotions are buried in the unconscious mind, potentially leading to psychological distress and disorders. More modern theories suggest that while short-term emotional suppression can be effective in certain contexts, chronic suppression can lead to adverse outcomes.

Short-term Effects of Emotional Suppression

Despite efforts to avoid negative feelings, emotional suppression often results in increased stress and anxiety. This paradox occurs because the effort to control emotions requires significant cognitive resources, leading to mental fatigue and heightened emotional responses over time.

Immediate Physiological and Psychological Responses

  • Physiological Responses: Suppressing emotions can lead to increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and elevated levels of stress hormones like cortisol.
  • Psychological Responses: Individuals may experience heightened anxiety, irritability, and a sense of emotional numbness.

Impact on Social Interactions and Personal Relationships

  • Reduced Authenticity: Suppression can lead to a lack of genuine interaction, as individuals may appear distant or disengaged.
  • Miscommunication: When emotions are hidden, it becomes difficult for others to understand and respond appropriately, leading to potential conflicts and misunderstandings.

Long-term Effects of Emotional Suppression

The long-term consequences of emotional suppression are even more concerning than those of the short term. They often appear in individuals who have been chronically suppressing their emotions without venting them or seeking support.

Mental Health Consequences

  • Increased Risk for Anxiety and Depression: Chronic suppression is linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression, as unaddressed emotions can accumulate and intensify.
  • Other Mood Disorders: Emotional suppression can contribute to the development of other mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder and dysthymia.

Physical Health Consequences

  • Cardiovascular Disease: Long-term suppression of emotions can increase the risk of heart disease due to prolonged stress and elevated blood pressure.
  • Immune System Dysfunction: Chronic stress from suppressed emotions can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses.
  • Other Health Issues: Emotional suppression is also associated with gastrointestinal problems, chronic pain, and somatic symptom disorders.\

Effects on Personal and Professional Relationships

  • Communication Difficulties: Suppression hinders open communication, leading to misunderstandings and unresolved conflicts.
  • Intimacy Issues: Emotional unavailability can create barriers to intimacy in romantic relationships, reducing connection and satisfaction.
  • Workplace Conflicts: Suppressed emotions can lead to workplace tensions, reduced teamwork, and lower job satisfaction.

Coping Mechanisms and Alternative Strategies

While some individuals may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance use or disordered eating to manage suppressed emotions, there are healthier emotional regulation strategies that can be adopted. Emotional awareness is the first step, involving the recognition and acknowledgment of emotions.

Cognitive reappraisal, which involves changing the way one thinks about a situation to alter its emotional impact, can also be effective. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, help individuals stay present and accept their emotions without judgement.

Therapy and counselling play a crucial role in helping individuals learn to express their emotions constructively. Techniques used in therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), can help individuals develop healthier ways of managing emotions. These therapeutic approaches provide a safe space for individuals to explore and express their emotions, leading to better emotional regulation and overall well-being.
